Bill Murray must have winced when he heard that mankind's latest salvo in the valiant war against gopher-dom ended in a massive explosion that sparked a prairie fire outside of Calgary, Alberta, over the weekend. Even though there was a ban on fires in the area, two Canadian men went into a field with a device called the Rodenator.
The Rodenator dumps a mixture of propane and oxygen into gopher holes, then lights them up like a Fourth of July fireworks display, causing an underground shock wave, killing the gophers and collapsing their tunnels.
Problem was, after a couple of successful blasts, the two Canucks overfilled one of the holes, and the flames jumped out and onto the dry grass, starting a fire that threatened several homes and caused $200,000 in damage.
Question raised: "Caddyshack" aside, is the the Rodenator a smart way to deal with gophers? Let us know.

If the gophers were out in an open field, why were they out there killing them in the first place ? Is torturing and killing living things their idea of a good time ? These knuckle draggers need to be put in jail where they can't hurt anything or anyone...or procreate.

Ok, for those of you who never had damage done by your so called harmless rodant (underground rat) ! Unless you have gophers in your own yard and horse pastures, you have no room to comment about them being harmless. I have had to put down two horses in the last 6 years due to broken legs ( and a few twisted human ankels )because of thier one of a zillion holes they leave about. Also create erosion and harm pasture growth. Thier mounds of sand they kick up damages hay baling equipment. Anyone eat hamburgers? That cost trickels down to the consumer. Gophers are about as good for the inviorment as mosquitos and lawers. Kill thim all off !

True story: A neighbor decided to get rid of the prairie dogs on his place, so he dumped gasoline down all the holes he could find and used a flare to light it off. Don't know how the prairie dogs fared, but he started a grass fire that nearly burnt down his brand new house. Then he was mad 'cause the fire dept. charged him $$ for their help, PLUS he got a ticket from the county for "burning without a permit!" It was awesome to watch, though!

Oh, for the love of...
Look, the gophers are bothersome rodents that cause erosion to the land. I can't count how many times I've twisted my ankle walking through my pasture.
This isn't cruel; the gophers don't even suffer! They are killed almost instantaneously by the shock wave.
Although, after all the damage they cause, being snuffed out that quickly is a mercy, if you ask me. I'd like to roast the little bastards on a spit for a while.
